Many soft glass flame workers are nervous about working without the security of a mandrel. Regardless of your level, this demonstration will provide valuable tips and techniques that will increase your confidence and promote your success as you explore off-hand sculpting. If you’ve already tried off-mandrel work and have encountered problems, this session may help you understand the source of your difficulties and what you can do to achieve a better result. Learning to sculpt this relatively simple and beautiful flower can open a world of possibilities for novice and experienced flame workers.
By following this demonstration, you will learn:
• When and when not to use insurance heat
• How to join individual glass components together to make a larger, more complex piece
• How to create secure and attractive connections
• How to use heat and gravity to shape your leaves and flower
• How to layer colors to give depth and variety to your creation
• How to honor nature by intentionally sculpting imperfections into your piece
Soda lime glass (suggested: 2 rods nile green, 1 rod blue medium transparent 2 rods cobalt, 1 rod light cobalt)
● Mini-masher
● Marver
● Straight tungsten pick, clean 1/8” mandrel or metal punch
● Fiber blanket
Wooden or acrylic base for your finished piece
* Ability to drill a hole in the base equal to the diameter of the glass peg you will create
The student will be able to observe how many pieces of hot glass can be joined together without
losing the temperature so as to have an object with many pieces of glass joined together. The importance of always staying in the fire so you don't lose the temperature to be able to execute the desired object will be the challenge of this demo. Even just executing it perfectly without losing the shape (this applies to all shapes) always keeping the object warm but without melting it is a big challenge. Trying this type of technique every day will make you master in the execution of
larger and more elaborate objects.
In this workshop we will look at 2 ways to include a piece of flower cane in a small bead. We will also cover encasement techniques and placement to create a balanced design.
